From blueprint to boarding: how WAISL laid down the AI-powered foundation for Bhogapuram Airport

Andhra Pradesh’s newest airport went from inauguration to a fully running international gateway in only sixteen days. Commercial domestic and international operations commenced just over a fortnight after the official opening of Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on 1st August 2026.

For a greenfield airport, that’s an unusually fast turnaround, and it says something about how WAISL built the technology behind the terminal. WAISL didn’t retrofit an existing IT setup here. It built the entire ecosystem from the ground up, and the sequence of decisions behind that build is worth looking at closely.

Building from zero, on a tight clock

Greenfield projects sound appealing on paper because there’s no legacy system to work around. In practice, teams must design, test, and deploy every layer, from network infrastructure to passenger-facing applications, inside a fixed window. WAISL delivered the full IT ecosystem for Bhogapuram in approximately 24 months, hosting almost every application on the cloud rather than on local servers, with monitoring infrastructure as the one exception. That’s a first for WAISL, and it changes what’s possible operationally. Cloud hosting means WAISL can add new airport analytics capabilities as the airport scales, rather than requiring a fresh hardware cycle each time.

The final stretch tested that foundation properly. Several mobile passenger services went live in the last 48 hours before the airport opened, which is a tight margin for anything customer-facing. Getting there took close coordination between commercial, operations, and other stakeholder teams, all of whom absorbed changing requirements right up to go-live. The intense run-up to the opening was the ultimate test of the airport’s digital ecosystem. Bhogapuram’s smooth transition into operations proved that its systems were built to work seamlessly together from day one.

The passenger-facing AI layer

The technology that travellers notice sits on top of that back-end work. DigiYatra at Bhogapuram runs on BioMetriK, WAISL’s own biometric identity system, cutting down on manual document checks at multiple touchpoints. Multilingual AI avatars at information kiosks help passengers find their way around the airport, especially those who are unfamiliar with the local language or signage. A massive video wall, measuring 6 metres by 120 metres, brings the terminal to life, while smart washrooms use technology to make a part of the travel experience that is often overlooked more comfortable and convenient. FTTO-based internet gives every stakeholder in the building, not only the airport operator, direct and dependable connectivity.

None of this sits in isolation. Each system feeds data back into the same operational picture, which is what makes the difference between a terminal full of smart features and a terminal that operates as one connected environment. A cybersecurity solution that engineers build into that cloud architecture from the outset, rather than bolt on afterwards, keeps that connectivity from becoming a liability as more systems join the network.

A benchmark for what comes next

The response to the terminal has been strong, particularly with respect to the architecture, ambience, and functionality of the space. Bhogapuram has become a reference point for future airport projects within WAISL. Its successful implementation proved that a well-integrated, cloud-first digital ecosystem can be repeated across other airport developments. WAISL’s systems integration approach helped Bhogapuram evolve from a greenfield airport project into a fully operational, technology-led terminal within two years. Get in touch with the team to learn more.
